If I was an artist.......

I would certainly have my brushes out for these beautiful roses. I bought them at the flower market....they are the softest antique buff tinged with green. As I am not an artist, I have created these little cards using digital effects.
I have found that they print nicely using the printer template- 4 to an A4 page- untick the 'fit to frame' box or you might lose the borders.
I used heavy weight paper and best print. They are single sided cards (they do not fold), pretty for writing notes on the back to your special friends.

Jacaranda Time

Jacaranda trees are in bloom all over Sydney at the moment. They make a glorious show and a beautiful carpet on the ground.
Originating in South and Central America and Mexico, they have become favourite trees here in Australia.
Grafton is a well known town for jacarandas in NSW, where they have a fabulous show of trees and a yearly festival.

The Southern Cross

The Southern Cross is the best known and most represented star group in the Southern Hemisphere. The group's distinctive shape is easily located because of its brightness and close proximity to each other. It can be seen all year round from almost anywhere in Australia. The constellation is not visible in the northern hemisphere.
The constellation was discovered in the early sixteenth century by European navigators and explorers who used it to steer by and also to calculate the time of day. Because it is not visible in the northern skies, there are no Greek or Roman myths or legends associated with it. Instead the Aborigines have many stories to tell using the stars of the Southern Cross.

This fellow was a very welcome visitor to my garden this week. Although there are lots of butcherbirds around, I don't see many in my garden.... mostly just their relation, the magpie.
The butcherbird has a very lovely song which you can hear here if you would like.

An Amish Quilt

I love Amish quilts for their practicality, beautiful solid colours and for the love that goes into their making.
This desktop is a representation of a crib quilt that I made some years ago, from a pattern that I bought in the village of Bird-in-Hand, in Pennsylania USA.
This village, along with Intercourse, Strasburg, Elizabethtown and Ephrata, was among favourites visited in the lovely County of Lancaster.
The picture below is taken from a postcard, showing a lovely Amish house and clothes hung out to dry. These are the colours I saw in many quilts.

Tawny Frogmouth

These lovely tawny frogmouth birds have set up home on my friend's back veranda, much to the chagrin of her small dog who can't understand what right they have to be there!
Although they look like owls, they are actually more closely related to nightjars.
It is a very exposed position for them as they are usually found camouflaged in tree branches and are quite difficult to spot. These two are a very trusting pair!

I may not be the best looking bird in the bunch.......not as beautiful as the parrots, as majestic as the cockatoos nor as amusing and appealing as the kookaburras.... but I am very Australian and I will give all the others a run for their money anytime. I am cheeky, bold, and very resourceful. I am the native Noisy Miner bird.
I live on the east coast of Australia from Northern Queensland, to South Australia and Tasmania.

A Tree in the Desert

This lovely eucalypt has enjoyed a season of rain in the Central Desert near Alice Springs. The countryside is vibrant and alive, the desert colours are beautiful and the Todd River at Alice has been running whereas in many years it is a dry river bed.

Karri Forest

For our May theme -Trees- I would like to start off with an Australian desktop wallpaper for you.

Karri is the Aboriginal word for the Eucalyptus diversicolor which is native to the SW region of Western Australia. It is one of the tallest trees found on the planet. You can read about this beautiful region of Western Australia here.
This forest is at Pemberton on the road to the Valley of the Giants, a wonderful forest of old growth tingle trees, some of which are over 400 years old.
The forest floor abounds with native wild flowers in spring and summer.
It is certainly a magic place and not to be missed if you are in Western Australia.

I have a folly to end the month of Art Deco and Art Nouveau presentations. I have enjoyed the subject enormously and hope you have too.
The 'wall' is made up of Nouveau tiles from Dover and the accessories are free tubes from Cajoline-Scrap. Thank you Cajoline!

Anzac Day 2010

Here is a simple desktop wallpaper to mark Anzac Day, observed on 25th April. I have used several of Judy's lovely papers...thank you Judy.
Tomorrow we will remember Australian and New Zealand servicemen who have served in all theatres of war, particularly those from WW1, who lost their lives in the service of their countries.

Armani Ladies

These beautiful figurines, which belong to my sister, are by the renowned sculptor Giuseppe Armani. His work covers a long period of time and his figurines embrace many different genres- from glamour and humour, to children and religion, and many others.....too numerous to mention ..... always superbly crafted and with an amazingly life-like quality. I am not sure when these were created but they certainly have the grace and style of the period we are looking at this month.
I have kept the presentation fairly simple and set it off with one of Judy's lovely scrolls.

Paris Style

This desktop wallpaper, my first for our April theme, is actually in the style of Art Nouveau which was popular at the turn of the 20th century.
Many of the entrances to the Métro de Paris were designed in the Art Nouveau style by Hector Guimard. This one is Porte Dauphine. Cast iron and glass were features of Guimard's designs.
The Exposition Universelle, a world fair, was held in Paris in 1900 and the dominant style was Art Nouveau.

Wilkinkarra Central Australia

These 2 photos were taken at Wilkinkarra, known to white people as Lake Mackay.
Wilkinkarra is a vast salt lake in the Western Desert region of Australia. It has an area of some 4000 kms square and is usually dry. It contains water after heavy rain and may fill a few times in a decade, attracting water birds and transforming the desert landscape.
Wilkinkarra features in the Dreaming narratives of the major Aboriginal groups in this area- the Kukatja people and the Pintupi people.

Byron Bay Summertime

This photo was taken at the beautiful Dolphin Beach at Byron Bay, NSW, Australia. No matter how crowded the area is in summer......and it is a very popular tourist destination.... this beach is always fairly deserted which makes it a great spot to walk and relax. A local secret!
Yes, there are often dolphins playing in the waves and the lighthouse point is a prime spot for whale watching at the times when they are migrating north to have their young, or returning to the southern ocean in summertime.

Frames for an album

I have made 2 frames to share. I am using them for an album that I am doing, hence the Australian theme. You can find them in a zip file here if you would like to use them for any personal use. They are size 800x800 and I find that they print out well.
The page that I have added here has a photo of my mother on her honeymoon.
Burragorang Valley was flooded in the late 1950s to create Sydney's major water supply, the Warragamba Dam.

More Wild Flowers of Western Australia

In this desktop I wanted to depict the forest floor, hence the congestion! There are so many delicate and beautiful wild flowers in Western Australia. Walking through forests and the bush is a delight.
Apparently, Western Australia is second only to South Africa for the number and variety of native flora.
They are certainly to be found in abundance in spring time.

Wildflowers of Western Australia

This lovely Silver Princess Gum, Eucalyptus caesia, was not flowering when we were in Western Australia but the gumnuts left after flowering are very beautiful. The tree has a weeping habit with white blooms and bark. It was prolific in places that we visited and made a wonderful show.

Remembrance Day 11th November

The photo was taken some years ago at Gallipoli and I would like to dedicate this desktop to these two Australian servicemen, killed in action in 1915.
I found the grave stones of Lieutenant Richard Thomas Francis Seldon and Trooper Charles Henry Edgeworth at Gallipoli. Both these men had been the subject of research by friends of mine.
Charles Henry Edgeworth was a member of the 6th Australian Light Horse Regiment.
Richard Seldon wrote home to his mother regularly from when he first enlisted until the morning of the day that he died, when he wrote............."very shortly we will be going into action and ere this letter reaches you no doubt the Sydney press will have full particulars of our work. Anyhow, I am quite ready for anything that happens and after this coming fight I think it most probable that we will be taken out of the firing line and given a chance to re-organise".
Little did he know the horror that awaited them.

The Endeavour

Luk Chai

Recently I visited this little fellow at Taronga Zoo, Sydney. He is the first elephant to be born in Australia and he has been named Luk Chai, meaning 'son' or 'triumph' in the Thai language.
His mother, Thong Dee, was a Bangkok street elephant before coming to Taronga.
Luk Chai is being very well looked after by his mother and aunties Porntip, Tang Mo and Pak Boon who are in constant attendance. He is starting to get quite adventurous and playful and all concerned are very tired by the end of the day, apparently!

Bush Stone-curlew

This lovely woodland bird stands 50-60 cms tall and lives in parts of Australia. It is the Bush Stone-curlew and much of its habitat is threatened. This is an adaptation of one of Ben's photos take in Queensland.The photo actually shows the birds standing on someone's veranda early in the morning, so they can't be too shy. Spunky, is how he described them.

Another lovely bird on this desktop. He/she is a blue heron that I spotted in a park, overlooking Auckland Harbour in New Zealand. It was enjoying the beautiful day, as we were too. This photo was taken by Ben on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia.I thought that it had the look of a painting about it, so I have used a watercolour filter to create that effect in a desktop.
Ben's bird photos are very lovely and I hope to use some more of them later on. Permission granted, of course.

Byron Bay

I have been playing with textures and effects, inspired by a recent week's holiday in Byron Bay.
Byron is on the north coast of NSW and is a town of wonderful beaches and clear aqua water with resident dolphins and green turtles joining the many board riders who find this place a little piece of Paradise.
Byron is also renowned for its music scene, the vibrant local markets, the visiting backpackers and 'hippie' population. If you are nearby I can highly recommend a visit. Guaranteed to keep you young!

Australian Bushland

I have tried to capture something of the nature of the Australian bush, in the wake of the tragic bushfires in Victoria. In time the flora will regenerate. The fauna will take longer as much of their habitat has been destroyed. The effects on the people who have lost loved ones, as well as property and animals, is hard for us to comprehend. Our love and support will be needed to see them through.
The photos that I have used in this desktop were all taken by Ben a couple of years ago, when he was travelling in the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria, not too far from the areas of the devastating fires.
I hope that this is a sensitive presentation. I do not wish to offend anyone.

An Octopus's Garden

I must admit to getting sidetracked here. I was trying to make backgrounds and patterns using underwater photos that I took while on holidays. My efforts so far have been less than startling! So I ended up making this silly wallpaper for kids.

Richard Tognetti is the leader of the wonderful Australian Chamber Orchestra -a very talented man and a much loved Australian.The orchestra travels worldwide and is acclaimed for its performances of classical chamber music as well as new and innovative works. I have made some pansy papers, ribbons and bows. This is my first atttempt at making bows and I am sure that they can be improved upon in future. The Endeavour

This might seem a strange setting for this lovely David Austin rose.
It was bred for hot climates and named after Captain James Cook's famous ship The Endeavour, so I thought I would give it a nautical treatment. It is blooming in my garden now (although this is not my photo)and is very pretty indeed.

I love this Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) painting, titled "Giant Magnolias on a Blue Cloth". The Magnolia grandiflora is a wonderful tree and we have some beautiful specimens in our Botanical Gardens here in Sydney. The blooms are huge and the perfume is gorgeous. Sorry I am unable to add perfume! Hope you enjoy it anyway.

I have kept this desktop fairly simple in order to display this lovely photo to best advantage. It was taken by Ben in the Central Desert of Australia where the sunsets are truly spectacular.
